CLEVELAND — One Cleveland Police officer was shot in the chest and a suspect is dead following a shooting on the city’s east side overnight.
The shooting occurred at the 6900 block of Ottawa Road around 12 a.m. Wednesday.
Chief Calvin Williams said, “a woman entered the Fourth District lobby to report a domestic incident. She mentioned that the male in question actually had weapons and was threatening both herself and a landlord in the home here on Ottawa.”
“They encountered the male in the rear hallway at which time the male produced a weapon,” Williams said. “Shots were exchanged between our officers and the suspects.”
Union President Steve Loomis sent a letter to officers following the incident that stated, in part:
“Folks, We had an officer shot in the chest tonight in the 4th District. As his partner took him to safety others on the scene responded by returning fire…The suspect was killed and thanks to Second Chance bullet proof vests our guy is sore but T&r’d from Metro. It is a GREAT day folks, our Brothers in the 4th are OK. The video and radio tapes will be great and demonstrative of exactly how professional and well-trained we are…”
The officer, who has not been identified, was hit at least one time in his bullet-proof vest. He sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center. He has since been released.
The suspect died on scene.
“Right now we’re still investigating to make sure of the number of officers who actually fired, the number of rounds that were fired and to positively identify the deceased,” Williams said.
Williams said there is video of the incident, but would not confirm if it came from one of the new body cameras that some officers just started using.
