ASHTABULA, Ohio– An Ashtabula County high school wrestling coach is facing criminal charges, for allegedly allowing one of his wrestlers to assault a fellow student.

The incident happened on January 21 outside Lakeside Junior High School.

Investigators said the 16-year-old victim had just watched his younger brother compete in a wrestling match, and that Lakeside High School wrestling coach Jerry Brady and a 17-year-old wrestler were upset that the boy, a former member of the team, was carrying a Lakeside wrestling bag.

According to a sheriff’s department report, when the older boy tried to grab the bag,  the 16-year-old punched him in the face.

Investigators said surveillance video shows that the 17-year-old then attacked the smaller student, punching him numerous times in the head and face.

Investigators said coach Jerry Brady did nothing to the stop the attack, which has incensed the father of the 16-year-old.  Tim Moore said, “Totally inappropriate, not something that you would think of out of a coach, who’s dealing with a lot of kids, totally inappropriate.”

When Ashtabula school district administrators found out about the incident, the 17-year-old student was suspended and Jerry Brady was placed on administrative leave.

Ashtabula Area City Schools Superintendent Patrick Colucci told FOX 8 that he recommended that coach Brady be terminated.

His future as coach is now in the hands of the Ashtabula School Board. They vote on it next week.

After reviewing the surveillance video, investigators charged the 17-year-old wrestler with assault and coach Brady was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Ashtabula County Prosecutor Nick Iarocci told FOX 8,  “In his capacity as a wrestling coach, over the juvenile that committed the offense, that he did in fact contribute to that delinquency by failing to take action to prevent the fight or stop the fight.”

The father of the 16-year-old boy said Brady should be removed as the Lakeside wrestling coach. “To actually encourage, let that kind of behavior, it’s the mentality. We don’t need that kind of mentality in a responsible position at the school system,” said Moore.

If convicted of the criminal charges, Brady could face up to six months in jail and a $1000 fine.
