CLEVELAND — After clinching a Wild Card position on Sunday, the Indians had one shot to gain a win and continue on to Boston in the ALDS.

The Tribe hosted the Tampa Bay Rays and their red-hot pitcher Alex Cobb for the American League Wild Card game at Progressive Field.

Rookie Danny Salazar got off to a solid start, striking out two batters in the top of the
1st inning, but that’s about all Tribe fans would see out of the young pitcher.

Delmon Young hit a solo blast to the bleachers in the 3rd inning, putting the Rays on the board first, 1-0. In the 4th inning, Desmond Jennings doubled to left to score James Loney and Evan Longoria for the 3-0 lead over the Tribe.

The Tribe had a chance to add some runs to the board in the bottom of the 4th, but couldn’t capitalize on a bases-loaded situation. Asdrubal Cabrera hit a ground ball to right for a double play to end the inning.

Salazar pitched just over four innings. He left the mound with a standing ovation.

Rays pitcher Alex Cobb appeared as advertised, going just over seven innings and holding the Tribe scoreless. Joel Peralta came on to replace Cobb in the 7th. The Indians had another opportunity to score with two men on and two outs, but Nick Swisher went down swinging to end the inning.

Marc Rzepczynski, Bryan Shaw, Justin Masterson and Cody Allen were able to keep the Rays scoreless until the top of the 9th inning. Joe Smith came on to replace Allen, but the Rays were able to add one more run for good measure.

The Indians fell to the Rays, 4-0.

The Tribe played their final game of the season in front of a sold-out crowd of 43,579 at Progressive Field.
